Few articles of clothing caused psychologists, sociologists and semiologists a lot of trouble as shoes have done. "Their importance goes far beyond the appearances”. In Rome, the “calceus” was reserved to nobles and magistrates and in the Middle Ages shoes were included in testaments but these remarks, although interesting or amusing, become less important if we observe the “shoe” object, which is the result of skill and experience, nice to see and touch. A large part of the charm of a shoe made to last is the leather used for its manufacturing. Soft and resistant, its surface makes you think to silk and the more it ages the more it improves. Its smell is for some people more exciting than a perfume and its colours make us think to the earth and its fruits. More important than a shirt, more wrapping than a pullover, more expressive than a tie, shoes are the best visiting card of the person who wears them. We are talking about a man who makes a choice thinking about comfort and elegance; a man who knows that a pair of shoes becomes nicer when it ages; a man who can “feel” the quality of the leather and appreciate the perfection of a stitching, taking note of the height of a heel; a man who likes best shoes with sober buckles and tassels; a man who also knows that even after many years a good quality sole must not bend. The great industrial transformation of the last century allowed our country to become one of the world leaders in the shoe manufacturing. But industrialization and technology dit not take the place of manual character of the work necessary to produce top quality shoes. In every kind of production, and particularly in the luxury one, the manual work is still very present, therefore we can talk about a semi-craftmade shoe. Maybe this is the reason for the great success of the “Made in Italy” products in all foreign markets, from New York to Canberra, from Hong Kong to Cape Town. Taste and ability play an important role and the result is the evidence and continuance of a tradition which made the Italian “ars sutoria” famous all over the world.

Shoes are a perfect architecture

We are sure that the pleasure of wearing a nice pair of shoes is based on the consciousness that they are the result of a great ability and patience, plus taste, sense of the proportions, knowledge of the materials, sensitiveness of the colours. Is there something else to add? The production of articles of clothing such as suits, shirts and so on does not need so many working hours as shoes. It is calculated that approximately two hundred operations are carried out from the moment when the leather is selected to the moment when a pair of shoes is carefully wrapped in fine paper and put in its box. It is impossible to list them all, but there are some “key points” of this manufacturing that are worth to know (see “Creation”) in order to better appreciate the result, i.e. what our feet wear. In short, we could say that a shoe is the assembly of the upper with the bottom, modelled and cut on a shoe-last but the reality is that the manufacturing of a pair of shoes requires skill, several operations and hundreds of persons and machines.

A masterpiece for your feet

Skill, taste and experience are the ingredients for creating a pair of shoes which allow you to walk comfortably, feeling safe and well; a pair of shoes which are not tight or do not force you to assume unnatural positions, in other words shoes that you can wear for many hours without problems, feeling at the same time elegant. We are talking about the great skill of the person who is able to transform the raw coat of an animal into a soft material, pleasant and resistant; about the taste of the person who creates the pattern and then the drawing; about the experience of the person who transforms the drawing into an object, a thorough architecture and not only a container.
